Wow, so much has changed. Every good intention of keeping this site, as well as my wiki went right out of the window. In fact I think this blog hasn’t even been functional most of the last year.

Most of my equipment has changed, most of my workflows have changed, and my physical location has even changed.
First, my new internet is cable and only has at max about 30Mbps upload. So all of my away-from-home video watching is severely trampled. But I’m living in a rural place, and I’m thankful to have gig-speed (500 Mbps lol) downloads.
My router is now a fanless, N100 machine with four 2.5gbe ports. I only realized later that four ethernet ports isn’t great for useability, and I’m now pining for something with two ethernet and two SFP ports. I upgraded my switches to 2.5gbe, but they each have SFP, and one has two ports. So I threw in an SFP card into the GNAS and now there is 10gbe between the switch and the computer. Yeah, not super useful, but I’m feeling the the 10gbe itch despite the fact that most of my other stuff maxes at 1gbe.
The cart looks great. It’s no longer the rickety old skateboard, but a rickety new, heavy-duty rolling computer cart. I recently added a clamp-on double shelf that gives me even more portable space. I still haven’t seen a rack situation that I like better, and it’s mostly the foot print. This has a long, rectangular foot print that forces everything vertical. I think this would all fit in a 2-foot tall rack, but then I would be dealing with a 2-foot cube. I don’t want this thing mounted right now, so wheeled portability is the key. I tall, narrow object is easier to put places, and in my opinion, looks nicely unconventional. I get to watch my Christmas tree glow if I want, and the airflow is unparalleled.

I know there are other upgrades since I last posted. I pushed the GNAS RAM up to 128gb for no particular reason. I started messing around with AI generated images and chat on that computer. Too much fun, but I do feel like I’m being dragged into a RAM race. My 3080 has 12gb RAM, but I’m already dreaming of the 90gb+ cards, or even some of these new AMD systems that let you use system RAM. The next few years, as always.
So new hardware, new software. The goal these days is polishing the setup, getting backups organized, and maintenance. There are fewer instances of finding software that becomes permanent. The *arr stack is humming, thanks to n8n and some custom profiles. And that’s the goal, automation for backups and maintenance.
And hopefully posting more than once a year.
